"The world’s greatest artists—from Monet to Van Gogh—recognized that any scene was incomplete without careful attention to light—the way it reflects, creates shadows and cultivates a mood. In our work in landscape lighting design, we, too, are artists, creating outdoor masterpieces that spark emotions and transport the viewer into a new world."

Jim Ply

Founder & Principal

Jim Ply, Principal and Founder of Oak Crest Landscape and Lighting, Inc., is a master of landscape illumination whose artistry can be found lighting residential estates and public monuments in California and across the United States.

Jim’s career in landscape and lighting design spans nearly 40 years. His formal training began by learning the principles of landscape design. These principles, along with his extensive knowledge of trees and plant material, has given him a unique perspective when it comes to landscape lighting design.

Having learned and trained from his mentor Janet Lennox Moyer, widely considered one of the world’s greatest landscape lighting designers, Jim has developed a passion for this beautiful art form and understands the importance of teaching the craft to the next generation of landscape lighting designers. His unique expertise in precise glare control has prompted leading fixture manufacturers to seek his advice to develop and modify fixtures to provide better performance.

Jim serves on the Board and is one of the lead educators for the International Landscape Lighting Institute (ILLI) founded by Janet Lennox Moyer. Teaching the art of exterior lighting to industry professionals throughout the United States and abroad for over 10 years has allowed him to continually refine his style and techniques to deliver the very best to his clients.

His knowledge, experience and stature in the industry have made him a sought-after speaker and presenter on the “Art of Landscape Illumination” to landscape architects, lighting designers and other industry professionals.

Jim holds licenses as a landscape contractor, low-voltage contractor and general contractor in the State of California (License #618707). In addition to serving on the Board of Directors and as a lead mentor for the International Landscape Lighting Institute (ILLI), Jim also is a member of the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (A.O.L.P.), California Landscape Contractors Association and the Southern California Chapter of the Institute for Classical Architecture and Arts (I.C.A.A.).

His work has been recognized with numerous industry awards, including the “Jan Moyer Award,” A.O.L.P.’s “Best in Industry” award and the “Residential and Exterior Design (RED)” award from Luxe magazine for a residential project he co-designed and installed with Hoffman and Ospina Landscape Architecture.

His projects have also been featured in Architectural Digest, Luxe magazine, Veranda magazine, Landscape Architect magazine, Landscape Contractor magazine, the 3rd Edition of Trade Secrets of Professional Landscape Lighting, and will soon be featured in Inspired Outdoor Living, a coffee table book to be published in 2023.
